Just In!State prosecutor in office of DPP convicted and remanded due to corruption Acts

Today the Anti-Corruption Court has convicted Kigwana Simon, a State Prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on two counts of Corruption under the Anti-Corruption Act. At the time the offences were committed, Kigwana Simon was working at the Resident State Attorney’s Office Nabweru.

He was accused of directly soliciting gratification of UGX 6,000,000 from court users in order for him to object to the grant of bail in a criminal case at Nabweru Chief Magistrate’s Court. On the 15th day of May 2019, near Nabweru playground, Kigwana Simon received UGX 200,000 from the Court users.

The same money had earlier been handed to the Court users by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit after they reported the prosecutor’s demands to Police. Upon arrest, a search was conducted on Kigwana Simon whereupon the marked money was found with him.

The conviction brings an end to a trial which commenced in 2019. Magistrate Grade One Esther Asiimwe sentenced the convict to a cash fine of UGX7,000,000 or serve 1-year imprisonment on both Counts, she also barred the convict from holding public office for a period of 10 years.
