China’s Japanese Seafood Imports Drop 67% In AugustChinese customs authorities have revealed imports of Japanese seafood products dropped by 67.6% year-on-year in August, the same month Tokyo began releasing treated nuclear wastewater into the ocean from the Fukushima power plant.
Japan began the 30-year process of releasing the wastewater – which the UN nuclear watchdog promised was safe to do – on August 24, the same day Beijing banned the import of Japanese seafood.
Last year, China imported around $571 million of seafood from Japan as the most significant customer world wide
